Buffalo

Buffalo / Cyncerus caffer

Information

Habitat:

The bush, on the territory of the entire country. It is encountered more often in the Northern part of the Zambezi valley and the high plateaus.

Size:

A typical male is 180 cm tall at the withers and weighs up to 800 kg; a female weighs up to 700 kg. Life-span – up to 23 years.

Habits:

A typical herd animal. Even the so-called Dagga Boys – old males chased off the herd – gather in groups of 2 or 3. It feeds on grass – it does not eat foliage, thus look for it at lush pasture spots and not around green bush. Not an especially aggressive animal, but should the sanitary minimum be trespassed or if it is wounded, it will charge. Very resilient to wounds and chase.

Hunting advice:

Most often it is hunted by stalking. Aim at the head, should the animal happen to be too close to you. From a distance, we recommend to shoot in the chest. A wounded buffalo is comparable to a tank rushed at you.

Caliber:

We recommend a caliber of minimum .416. The minimum caliber that is actually permitted is .374 HH Magnum /, even 9,3 in all its variations of х62, х64 or х66/, but it is a slightly light stopper for a muscle and aggression mass of 800 kg. We recommend an express, so that it may hold one soft-point bullet and one fully covered one.
If the animal stands sideways, you may use a soft-point bullet. However, if you are shooting frontally, this would be useless. Do not fly in the face of fortune. Bear in mind that the buffalo’s skin is thick and its ribs are not spaced-out. In other words, your bullet is bound to hit bone in any case.

Trophy:

The skull, tale and legs. You may have a head-and-breast mount or just the skull. We do not recommend taxidermy preparation in Africa.

Location:

In all territories we organize hunts in – in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Tanzania. The chance to shoot a buffalo in Namibia is a slight one.
